Acting and playing a guitar are part of his daily life. Modelling was game-changing for John. You want to know why? Read what he shared with us! John in the spotlight!
Introduce yourself with a few words? Who are you?
Hey everyone, my name is Jan-Willem. In the modelling world I’m known as John Wesselingh, because that’s more of an international name. After dropping out of university two years ago I got into this business and since then I’ve been to Paris, London, Milan and now I’m living in New York!
What are you hobbies and biggest passions?
I really dig everything creative. Writing for instance, juggling with words until they make up a witty sentence gives me chills. Other than that I love acting, video editing and playing the guitar. Spending time with my girlfriend and playing soccer are also very important for me but unfortunately I only get to do that when I’m in Holland.
When and how you started your modelling career? Were you scouted by somebody?
I was scouted in a very 21st century kind of way: Facebook! Dutch photographer Martijn Smouter asked me to do a shoot with him and because I needed pictures for my acting portfolio, I gladly accepted. He didn’t tell me he was a scout until after the shoot and one month later I was on my way to Paris!
Did modelling influence or change your life? If yes, in what way?
Oh it’s been a major game changer! For the past two years I’ve lived in three other countries than Holland, met all kinds of people from all over the world and worked very hard with very respectable professionals in the business. I have experienced a lot since I started and therefore I have grown a lot as a person. I will cherish this time of my life forever.
What are the biggest fashion shows/brands you have done and worked for?
I walked for Etro two seasons in a row now, which is a pretty big deal. Other than that big brands I’ve worked for include Versace, Dsquared and Woolrich.
What is fashion for you? How would you describe your personal style? Where do you pull your inspiration from?
Fashion is everywhere. What you choose to wear and not wear says a lot about your personality. My style is a bit old fashioned I think. Most of the days you’d find me wearing a good pair of jeans, a t-shirt and my leather jacket. I like to play with colours and silhouettes rather than prints. I draw my inspiration mainly from movies.
Do you get to travel a lot for your work? If so what’s your favourite city that you have visited? Do you have a dream destination?
I travel all the time, that’s mainly why I love this job. I flew to Bari, a city on the southern coast of Italy for a job once and I loved it there. Venice was also good. My favorite city is New York, definitely, although I would love to visit Tokyo sometime.
Give us 5 facts about you people may not know.
Absolutely terrified of submarines and, ironically, my favourite song is about a submarine
I can eat soup with a fork
Once almost booked the lead role in the Dutch equivalent of Brokeback Mountain
Born with a ADD, which is a concentration disorder
I pride myself on being a hopeless romantic
What are your top priorities? What keeps you going?
I want to succeed in everything I do in life whether it’s work, relationships or passions. I’m a very, sometimes overly ambitious guy but that has also brought me to where I am today. I’d say that ambition, that aching feeling wanting to succeed is what keeps me going.
Define happiness. What makes you laugh and what makes you happy?
Love, really. It doesn’t matter if it’s love that you give to and get from people, or if it’s the love you put into something your currently working on. As long as you got love, there will always be happiness.
How do you see Life through your eyes?
I think it’s pretty simple but people insist on making life very complicated. Just do what you love to do, love whoever you want to love and be yourself. To say it with a big cliché; It’s not about the years in your life, it’s about the life in your years.
What is worth fighting for the efforts and the time?
I feel like a damn philosopher with all these questions, man! To say something else for once, fight for pizza. Pizza is good, pizza is safe. Pizza will never let you down thus it’s worth time and effort!
3 songs from your current playlist?
Ben Howard – Conrad
John Mayer – Vultures
Tom Odell – Long Way Down
If you could give a name of this moment of your life, how would this chapter be called?
How do you imagine the future and what does it hold for you?
I just filed my application for fashion school so I’m hoping that goes well. Other than that I’m hoping to enjoy the future with my current girlfriend, my family and friends, lots of league wins for Ajax, new seasons of Breaking Bad and some kind of invention that will make my cat live forever.
If you could tell something to the whole world what it would be?
Guys, start wearing hats more often!! Girls dig that
