Can you tell us more about yourself?
Hi! I’m Esther. I launched my label ‘Esther Haamke’ one month ago and am still enjoying the buzz of my first collection “Snake Preview”. For as long as I can remember, drawing has been a natural way for me to express myself. However, during my studies in illustration, I realised I wanted to do more in fashion and that I wanted to showcase my illustrations in a different way. That’s why I went to Antwerp to study Fashion Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In Antwerp, illustration is a big part of the design process and I think fashion and illustration work incredibly well together. I absolutely love combining different disciplines and how they can compliment each other. I hope the future will lead to some cool collaborations!

How would you like to describe your collection?
Colourful, energetic, streetwear with a bit of sparkle, fresh and playful. Hopefully it makes you smile.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Most of my ideas come from experiences that I’ve had. This can be a journey, for example my vacation in California, which led to my 2nd year collection “L.A. Dogwalkers”. It can also be a little thought or an image that usually forms the starting point of the design process. I get a lot of inspiration from the artwork of Jeff Koons, photos from David la Chapelle and I can get totally lost on the internet while looking at images. Anyway, I am obsessed by the prints and use of colours from the 80’s and 90’s. They are always an influence on my work. During my research I usually start by creating an atmosphere. From there on I simultaneously work on the design, the prints and fabrics. Working on one inspires the other. I have to say that I really enjoyed working with leather and making embroideries. For “Snake Preview” I started with the idea that I wanted to create an oasis for myself after a rather rough period in which I was a bit lost. My collection is almost a literal translation of that period, but in a positive and playful way: Dancing cobras, prickly cactuses while following the stars!
