He never thought his life will change so much because of modelling, until he sent his photos to Elite Amsterdam, where great opportunities came from! If we have to tell you the lesson that we learnt from Jan, it would be: Chase your dreams!
Introduce yourself with a few words? Who are you?
I am Jan, 18 years old, born and raised in Etten-Leur (a town in the south of the Netherlands).
What are you hobbies and biggest passions?
My hobbies and my biggest passions are actually the same things. They are travelling, learning new things, seeing different cultures and eventually getting the chance to see the whole world.
Did modelling influence or change your life? If yes, how?
Modelling did influence my life. Quite a lot, actually. Last year i was at high school (senior year HAVO 5) and I never ever thought about modelling. But then something changed. I was waiting with a friend if mine for a hockey training and suddenly he said: “Jan, do you want to make 500 euro in an hour?” I was making with my recent job back then 4,50 an hour. So that sounded pretty damn good. Of course, I said yes and we sent pictures to Elite Amsterdam. It was more for fun, but I thought “hey, I got nothing to lose.” So a few of days later I got an email back and they asked if I can send more pictures. And at that point, I started getting interested in modelling! I sent more photos, that emailed me back again to go to the agency and of course I went there. So i was sitting there, didn’t know what to expect at all, talking to the director and bookers and had actually no idea what I was doing, but meanwhile it was exciting. I did an indoor casting for the Elite Model Look. And I won that contest. Thats how it all started. Then I finished my high school year and as soon as I heard I passed my exams, I was on an airplane flying to Hong Kong for modelling for 3 months. Now I am a fulltime model and not doing a study and I am away from home. Before I got signed I never thought this would happen.
What is fashion for you? How would you describe your personal style? Where do you pull your inspiration from?
I think fashion is a never ending “progress” and a creative way to express yourself towards people. “You are what you wear”. How I see my personal style is most of the time classy and chilled. I love being dressed really classy and I also like to dress myself with some chilled jerseys and sometimes even streetstyle. Depends on the way I feel that day or something else. My inspiration comes from my work actually. When I am working, I am always around latest fashion and I see what other people are wearing and then they inspire me in some kind of way.
Do you get to travel a lot for your work? If so what’s your favourite city that you have visited? Do you have a dream destination?
I have travelled a lot for modelling. I have been to Hong Kong, Paris and Milan the past half year. It is really difficult to say what my favourite city is, because there a few cities that I think are amazing but are so different from each other, that I can’t say what is my favourite in them. My favourites are Milan Berlin and Hong Kong. A dream destination is Australia. I have to go there one day.
Give us 5 facts about you people may not know.
1 I never read a book in my life (my previous teachers, if you read this, I am sorry)
2 I love junk food, so I have to control myself everytime I walk by McDonald’s or Burger king.
3 I love good parties
4 I can not live without music. I even put my earphones, when I am out the house for just 2 minutes.
5 I am always out. Absolutely not a staying-home kind of type.
What are your top priorities? What keeps you going?
My top priority is getting the most out of it (het onderste uit de kan halen)! That is how you say it in Dutch. It means that if you do something, do it good and do your best! That’s how you can achieve something.
Define happiness. What makes you laugh and what makes you happy?
What makes me laugh are the people around me, my family, my friends and even the new friends that I make with my job. What makes me happy is doing new things, like new adventures or things that I have accomplished.
How do you see Life through your eyes?
Life for me is like a big exciting, sometimes scary journey. You always experience new things, you go through good and bad times and even if it is a good or a bad time, you learn from it and you grow. All the experiences you have, makes you the man you are.
What is worth fighting for the efforts and the time?
What is worth fighting for, for me is to be well-educated and building up a good career. And in the end, having my own family. That is what the good career is for.
3 songs from your playlist?
This is a hard question for me, because I ike many styles of music, but these 3 songs are my favourite. They take me to another place, and that is what music is for.
Doin’ it right – Daft Punk
For What It’s Worth – buffalo Springfield
Hey mama – Kanye West
If you could give a name of this moment of your life, how would this chapter be called?
The chapter will be called: An interesting journey
How do you imagine the future and what does it hold for you?
What I wish for my future to be is to do a good study, have a nice job, my own family and friends. That is what I work for.
If you could tell something to the whole world what it would be?
There is no person who can do everything for you. That is something you have to do yourself. You have to rouse, grab life by the throat and make something out of it.
